She’s vegan, a free spirit, a gypsy, a mermaid, a surfer, and she’s wise… beyond her years. Tasha’s instagram account is a mixture of surf, sun, health and style. It’s whimsical and magical, you literally get lost. Meet the lovely lady behind it… Tash…

Tell us about your journey, what sparked your passion for the health and wellness industry?

I’ve been a vegetarian since I was a baby, so I guess that sparked my interest in what nutrients were in which foods… and growing up in Byron Bay you’re surrounded by like-minded humans that are so into their organic, whole and local produce as well as natural remedies and wellness. I’ve also always found it fascinating how certain compounds found in plants provided by the earth… in a quick-fix pill-popping culture we have these incredible ancient remedies from different cultures that work, but are being palmed-off as the ‘alternative’ to man-made chemicals.

What’s your number one wellness tip?

Listen to your body! Our internal intuition is the one ingrained thing from our ancestors that warrants our survival. Our cravings are something we need to listen to, as it’s your body’s way of speaking to you. Whether a particular food or habit agrees with you or not, you’re smarter than your head in that it’s programmed to survive, it’s all instinctual.

What’s your one non-negotiable when it comes to your health?

I honestly believe that you don’t need animal products in your diet to be healthy; in fact humans are so much healthier without them! I’m vegan for ethical and environmental reasons primarily, but there is far too much solid evidence to ignore the fact that it’s much healthier for human beings to be consuming plant foods. The China Study is the first example that comes to mind. Obviously different things work for different people, but there has been such concrete research done over the years that clearly elucidate those who eat less animal products live longer, healthier lives!

What motto do you live by?

All that matters is kindness and how you treat others, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or species. There’s a really great quote that I feel captures this perfectly – “Humanity’s true moral test, its fundamental test…consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals.”
– Milan Kundera. Also, it’s all about balance! I’ve been on both sides of the coin where I have been obsessively ‘healthy’, socially quite isolated as a result and consequently really miserable; and also where I’ve partied too hard and just completely run my body into the ground. So I think as humans we’re constantly trying to find that balance, it’s not easy but as long as you are able to not stress too much about the fact that a certain wine isn’t organic when you have drinks with friends, you’re okay.

What is your proudest achievement?

I’m not too sure of that just yet! I’m not even 21 years old yet, so I feel like that’s hopefully something that’s still coming.

What are your goals for the future?

Launch my blog (soon! Haha) and just have that as a platform to expand on creativity and sharing it; it’s still so amazing, humbling and bizarre to me that people are interested in and connect to it! But just continue writing and photography and styling, as well as spreading a message of kindness and compassion towards other earthlings. Hopefully a book in the future too, but we’ll see!

Tell us something not many people know about you?

I wanted to be a veterinarian until I was 17. Also I lived in Mexico and Venezuela for two years when I was 8 and 9 haha!

Can you share with us one of your favourite recipes?

This was a recipe I made as a little hayfever cure – it’s full of anti inflammatories and antioxidants to help alleviate allergy symptoms.

Anti-inflammatory Smoothie
smoothie

Ingredients:

1 cup of coconut water (or almond/coconut milk for a creamier smoothie)
1 cup cubed pineapple
1/2 frozen banana
1 cup frozen or fresh blueberries (frozen makes for a thicker smoothie)
1/2 cup strawberries (if you use acai instead of macqui, raspberries give a good dose of flavour!)
Tablespoon macqui berry powder (available from Loving Earth)
Handful goji berries
Handful of ice
You can also add any green superfoods like spirulina, chlorella, etc.

Method:

Blend together pineapple, strawberries and coconut water. Add pea protein, macqui powder and goji berries and blend until smooth. Add frozen banana, blueberries, ice and blend to thicken
Add any remaining superfoods, and enjoy!

Try it with a pinch of turmeric for extra anti-inflammatory power!
