I was recently asked about the effectiveness and safety of the many Detox Tea programs. So I took a look at the ingredients list of a popular Tea Detox company and found the following ingredients:
Natural flavours – could be an essential oil which is fine, or could be some very unnatural concoction. For example, MSG is allowed to be labelled as a ‘natural flavour’ on an ingredients list. I always avoid because you just don’t know.
Caffeine – dehydrating and affects the nervous system. Not the worst thing in the world. It’s okay to enjoy caffeine as part of a balanced diet but I guess this is what is in the morning tea to make you feel awake and give you energy. Maybe just enjoy a cup of good coffee if this is what you want?
Senna Leaf – natural laxative effect which is extremely dehydrating. If you’re having trouble moving your bowels don’t take laxatives! Instead aid your digestion with probiotics and other gut supports. Laxatives can upset normal bowel function so that it depends on laxatives to work. I would avoid at all costs.
These ingredients can result in pregnancy and unsustainable weight loss:
Pregnancy – the senna leaf laxative affect can affect the Pill adversely which means you can get pregnant without planning to.
Weight loss – the weight loss claims are due to dehydration (caffeine and senna leaf) which makes you look less bloated. Therefore, weight loss is due to water loss, not fat loss.
If you must complete a Tea Detox, look for an appropriate brand and do your research:
Your Tea – if you’re going to do one, choose the brand Your Tea. I looked at the ingredients lists and it contains safe herbs. It avoids highly caffeinated and laxative herbs. Or maybe sip some green tea? It’s much cheaper and it contains a lot of benefits.
You MUST eat regular meals and snacks and compliment with tea. Skipping meals adversely affects hormones, metabolism, moods and blood sugar balance.
There is no quick fix if you want good health. It’s a lifestyle. It’s not a short term diet or detox.
If your goal is to lose weight and get clean, skip the teatox. Consume a nutrient-rich, balanced diet that includes protein, carbs and fats. These are all ESSENTIAL. Move your body, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep.
What are your thoughts on the popular tea detox diets?
