Our kidneys are responsible for hormone production, filtering excess water and sodium and cleansing our blood. They are one of our most vital organs. Kidney detox is covered in detail (along with the other detox organs) within my Conscious Cleanse program (7 day meal with all recipes and a real food shopping list). Today I’m sharing my top kidney detoxification tips:
Water – adequate hydration ensures that the kidneys can filter out unwanted toxins. Aim for at least 2 litres of water each day. Passing clear urine with little to no smell indicates that your water intake is adequate and your kidneys are effective.
Potassium – one of your kidney’s main roles is to ensure the body comprises adequate potassium. Citrus fruits and bananas are fantastic sources of potassium.
Cranberries – a superfood when it comes to cleansing the kidneys. They are also helpful for urinary tract infections. Source fresh cranberries where possible. Other options are sugar free dried cranberries and sugar free cranberry juice.
Herbs – dandelion and parsley are fantastic herbs to support kidney health. Enjoy warm dandelion tea and garnish your meals with fresh parsley.
Spices – ginger and tumeric support kidney health. Flavour your stews, soups and stir fry’s with fresh ginger and turmeric.
Juicing – watermelon, celery and lemon juice is an effective kidney cleanser. Simply juice 4 stalks of celery, ½ cup chopped watermelon and ½ lemon.
