Jessica Sepel is a qualified nutritionist, health blogger and wellness coach. She recently wrote her first book, The Clean Life. Through The Clean Life, Jess explains that the path to great health starts with good nutrition and positive lifestyle changes. If you can get those right, all of those things you want and deserve will follow naturally: better moods, high energy levels, improved digestion, less stress and weight loss. Meet Jess…

Tell us about your journey, what sparked your passion for the health and wellness industry?

Like so many young women, I spent my teenage years and early 20s struggling with negative body image. I tortured myself to the point that food was the enemy. It took time, but I realised that hating my body was impacting every aspect of my life. From that point on, I committed to understanding nutrition and how my body works. It shifted my mentality. I now view food as a source of nourishment. I ate in a way to heal my mind and body.

What’s your number one wellness tip?

Rest, rest, rest. I cannot emphasize enough how important proper rest is for our overall beauty and wellbeing. Rest is not a luxury – it is a necessity. Identify time each and every day that allows you to relax and do something truly enjoyable – whether it’s a walk, meditation, reading a good book, treating yourself to a manicure, or simply unplugging and getting solid sleep.

What’s your one non-negotiable when it comes to your health?

Not surprisingly, it’s getting 8 hours of sleep! I prioritise rest and believe that getting a solid 8 hours is truly the best thing we can do for ourselves.

What motto do you live by?

My living mantra is “Let it go.” It is my belief that when we hold on emotionally, we hold on physically. Now that I’m in a healthier frame of mind, I believe my thoughts will create my reality. I let go of what doesn’t serve me.

What is your proudest achievement?

Rebuilding my relationship with myself and my body – giving up the diet mentality to embrace real, whole foods, and then guiding others to do the same!

What are your goals for the future?

I hope to find a publisher for The Clean Life. I’d love for it to be the first of many books to come as I gain further knowledge and insight working with clients in my nutrition practice. I want to reach people on a global scale. I also think it would be great fun to design a line of activewear!

Tell us something not many people know about you?

I have a bit of stage fright! I love speaking with people one on one, but speaking in front of a crowd has taken some practice to feel comfortable.

Can you share with us one of your favourite recipes?

I love a good smoothie! My Power Protein smoothie topped with homemade granola is my all-time favourite. I could have it for breaky, lunch and dinner!

power protein smoothie

1 serving of protein powder (100% natural pea, whey or sprouted brown rice protein) OR 1 raw egg OR 2 tablespoon LSA mix
1-2 teaspoon stevia
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon ground
1 teaspoon vanilla extract/powder (if available)
1 teaspoon chia seeds
1/2 cup frozen berries
1/2 frozen banana
1/2 cup spinach leaves
1/2 cup almond milk
1/2 cup ice blocks (the more ice the creamier!)
1/2 cup coconut water/filtered water

Simply place all ingredients in a blender or food processor until smooth, then top with homemade granola, nuts or seeds.
