These 6 foods are junk food in disguise. They do a pretty darn good job of hiding their true selves from us too. Heck, I was fooled. I used to drink fruit juice with every meal.
Agave – apparently a healthy alternative to refined sugar. When you actually do a little research, you’ll realise that agave isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Agave is the end product of highly processed juice from the agave cactus plants. The juice is extracted, filtered and then heated and concentrated to produce agave syrup. Agave is mostly fructose (the bad stuff we get too much of) and is more processed than white sugar.
Subway – often considered the healthy takeaway. This is what a Chicken Teriyaki Wrap with cheese and sweet chilli sauce contains: Wheat flour, Water, Vegetable Fat, Glycerine, Iodised Salt, Canola Oil, Wheat Gluten, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Guar Gum, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate (SSL), Mono- Diglyceride, Preservative (282, 200), L-cysteine Hydrochloride, Fumaric Acid, Vitamins (Thiamin, Folate), Sugar, Thickener (1422)(Maize), Fructose, Tomato Paste, Ginger (Crushed Ginger, Ginger Oleoresin), Salt, Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein (Maize), Acidity Regulators (260, 270), Garlic (Dehydrated, Powder), Sesame Seeds, Minced Onion, Red Bell Peppers, Sesame Oil, Colour (150d), Spices (Pepper, Cayenne, Clove), Preservatives (202, 211), Flavours (Green Onion, Garlic), Milk Solids, Emulsifiers (331, 339), Non Fat Milk Solids, Salt, Emulsifier (Soya Lecithin ), Preservative [(200), (1105, From Egg, Water, Sugar, Chili (13%), Salt, Maize Thickener (1414), Food Acid (Acetic Acid), Vegetable Gum (Xanthan), Colours (Paprika Extract, Caramel), Natural Flavour, May contain traces of sulphites.
THIS IS NOT REAL FOOD.
Anything labelled ‘low fat’ – when the fat is taken out of a product, it tastes like crap so sugar is added to give it flavour. Fat doesn’t make is fat. Sugar makes us fat. Enough said.
Soy flour – often used in gluten free options. Soy contains a digestive enzyme that makes it difficult to digest unless it has been soaked and cooked properly. Good quality tofu, milk, tempeh, natto and miso that are made using the whole soy beans have been prepared in this way. Tempeh, natto and miso have also been fermented so they’re even easier to digest. Soy flour is extremely difficult to digest as it hasn’t been prepared properly.
Artificial sweeteners – these are chemicals. Your body does not know what they are and therefore, cannot digest them. They are not a healthy alternative to sugar. When something is labelled ‘sugar free’, chances are it contains artificial sweeteners.
Fruit juice – a nice little concentrate of fructose straight into the body. It’s fine to eat whole fruit as the fibre ensures the fructose is absorbed slowly. It’s not okay to drink fruit juice. You may as well just spoon white sugar into your mouth.
Do you know of any other fake health foods? There must be a few of them out there!
